Kenya From the Air

29 May 2016 by LuAnne Cadd

I have a lot to write about, but right now can only manage a few pictures of the scenery on a MAF flight from South Sudan to Kenya, passing over Lake Turkana and on to Marsabit and Nairobi. Kenya is blessed with some of the most stunning variety of scenery I’ve seen anywhere. These four photos are only from the far north in Marsabit County, the most remote and largest county in Kenya. It was a long flight, but man, I’m so fortunate to be able to see this extraordinary place.

Lake Turkana, Kenya

Flying to the town of Loyengalani on the southeastern edge of Lake Turkana in northern Kenya. The lake is the world's largest permanent desert lake and the world's largest alkaline lake.

Gatab, Kenya

Gatab is just a few minutes flight east from the desert-like region around Lake Turkana, a small town on top of a green mountain surrounded by desert. There's a nice little airstrip where Africa Inland Mission has a base.

Mt Kulal Biosphere Reserve, Kenya

Just past Gatab are these beautiful green mountains, then further on it's back down to the dry desert.

Marsabit, Kenya

As you fly south to Nairobi from Marsabit town, you fly over Marsabit National Park, a thick forest pockmarked with extinct little volcanic depressions with lakes inside.

Spent a night in a Turkana Village in 88 when a flash flood trapped us. We tried to outrun it but busted through the lake-bed crust and got stuck . . . hours digging out. You pic’s brought back the “now good” memories. Thanks-
